New EU climate target: 90% less CO2 by 2040

The European Commission unveils an ambitious climate target for the European Union (EU): 90% less CO2 by 2040 compared to the 1990 calendar year.

The Commission expects the energy sector to be carbon neutral shortly after 2040. Given its leadership in decarbonization, the European energy sector must prioritize the shift to renewable energy sources.
